Help with MTS format?

My camera saves all videos in MTS format and it's very confusing. I'm not very good with computers so I need help. I read that you can convert this but when all the converters I found either cost money or didn't work. Basically I need to find a way to covert these files to something that Windows Movie Maker will read. Please help!
